Brief Description of Functionality

 1.Purpose

The main objective of the PC EMI Interface is to allow the EMI device for acupuncture diagnostic-stimulation (see details here) to become integrated with a personal computer thereby becoming more user-friendy for the practioner. It preserves all of the functionality of the original device but allows the practioner to send results of meridian measurements directly to their PC and create automated and accurate information for their customer files. The software automatically creates a number of charts in the patient file; results of their specific data readings, and the program can be integrated to provide a diagnostic summary. The direct reading from probe to computer saves the practitioner's time and eliminates three types of human errors:

    1) Device reading error, i.e. reading 86 instead of 82, etc.

2) Errors when manually writing the result down;

3) Errors when typing results, keeping consistency of Meridian and Side

  2. Implementation

 The device includes a commutation part, signal conditioner, converter, and USB interface. Therefore, it can be connected to the EMI device and the computer (desktop or laptop) with ease. The commutation part is inserted between the probe and EMI device using the existing DB9 connectors; the conditioner / converter is connected to the computer through a standard USB port. The EMI device and the probe requires no modification, additionally there is no requirement for computer enhancement, such as adding extra cards, etc. There is no necessity for any additional power supply.

3.Software modifications

The software program, on top of the original EMI program functionality and using the same set of charts, supports the new hardware, including zeroing and calibration. The new software program provides these new features, along with the following enhancements:

-      Better Patient / Exam page layout. Allows a convenient way to see the treatment progress in consecutive exams for a patient (screen view)

-         More consistent Setup tools:

§         Office page allows for setting prefix/postfix to the practioner name, along with Office data  

§         You can import existing data from previous versions of the EMI software, keep Patients and Exams data in different databases, and use a Patient database from different applications, such as  MediSoft

§         Colors page allows the practitioner to set colors or patterns separately for printer and display; the printer used can be BlackAndWhite mode or Color

§         You can specify the printer if you have more than one (say, on the network), specify Mono or Color mode, and specify the paper size

§         In addition to the Graph, you can include a description of out-of-norm meridians and / or dietary suggestions for the patient in the report. You can also set font, margins etc.

§         Sensor page helps you to detect whether the converter is on-line, make zeroing and calibrating

-        During an examination, the next point to be examined and the result of the last measurement can be seen in the large font; also, every measurement achieved is accompanied by a beep (system view)

-        Notes can be added and seen or not seen by the patient and for every subsequent examination -        On graph page one, user can redefine content of the printout (graph view)
